Those who are attending the #PeoplesVote march have every right voice their opinion. However as a Soft Remainer who voted and campaigned for Remain I have always made clear that I think pushing for a Second Referendum is a bad strategy for those of us opposed to a Hard Brexit.
Those pushing for a Second Referendum have yet to consider the possibility of a Second Referendum leading to an even Bigger win for Leave. Should this occur Right-wing Brexiteers would see it as an even bigger mandate for their deluded fantasy of a No Deal/Hard Brexit scenario.
Furthermore a Second Referendum campaign would be a carbon copy of the first. It would be filled with the same lies, racism, nastiness, divisiveness and bile that blighted the first back in 2016. It would be a gift to the Far-right and a rallying call for them to unite behind.
Not only that If Remain won 52-48 the Hard Right Brexiteers would cry betrayal and it would make for a convenient and classic Far-right Stab in the back myth. It would be a gift to them and they would be asking for yet another Referendum ad infinitum.
This would create a monumental constitutional crisis on top of the one already created by the 2016 result. People would completely lose faith in Britain's already fragile democracy and would be amenable to the worst, most racist ideas of the Authoritarian Far-right.
Brexit is a two pronged constitutional crisis. Following through with the result will lead to massive changes to arrangements that have served Britain since the 1970's. Equally not following through with the result will lead to a catastrophic loss of faith in British Democracy.
This is why Corbyn's strategy is so important. Pushing to Remain in a Customs Union with the EU whilst negotiating access to the Single Market via a bespoke deal may not be everyone's cup of tea. It is however the one path that may avoid making the situation even worse.
It would be respecting the vote to Leave the EU whilst simultaneously maintaining a close working relationship to Europe that does not lead to a complete pulling up of the drawbridge. It would not be perfect but would be far better than the alternative scenarios I have outlined.
It is the only possible way to reunite what is a very fragmented and very divided nation. That is why in conclusion I would ask and urge People to trust in Labour and Corbyn's strategy. It is the only conceivable way to possibly bring the country back together again.
