The European Services Forum, @EUServicesForum the main lobby group for Services industries has written to @MichelBarnier and @DavidDavisMP warning that there will need to be a longer transition period.

Worth reading in full, given how Northern Ireland and the Customs issue has warped Brexit future relationship talks into having outsized focus on goods - when its services that really matter for both sides.
Letter wd also seem to support Commission contention that “Single Market for Goods” bleeds heavily into services, with some 40% of value of goods coming in form of linked services.

That bleeds into free movement (since people deliver services), right of establishment etc

The DUP still playing hardball...despite efforts by UK Govt to do more to assuage fears raised by backstop.

But will be interesting barometer of where we are, to see how hard DUP reaction is to new paper to be published later this AM. /1
What is this? Well, per @SkyNews @DLidington will set out a series of measures that is intended to address fears raised by the Withdrawal Agreement that Northern Ireland is going to be treated very differently. See below. /2
@SkyNews @DLidington What's the problem here? Well go back to December 2017 and the Joint Report on Brexit, which was agreed after a DUP walkout forced May to retreat.

The DUP won an extra Para (50) which promised "unfettered" trade between NI and GB internal markets "in all circumstances" /3

So seems point 1 is an extension/elucidation of what @DLidington told #r4today on Dec 14.

FWIW am told by Brussels sources this is now focus of UK 'ask' on reassurances/ clarifications. To set clear aspiration date for trade deal to avoid backstop /1

@DLidington @DavidHenigUK This is not least because even if you think a 'quick and dirty' deal is doable on some aspects (you hear some discussion of this) the UK would STILL need to know what it wanted.

And as the Political Declaration makes painfully clear, it doesn't know. Or cannot agree rather. /3

Firstly, with regret, no chance it could be negotiated in 18 months, when CETA itself took 8 years from launch to implementation. We'd need a longer transition period 2/
Next, can we achieve full tariff and quota free trade? What is stated as an ambition is typically not fully achieved in a trade agreement, but it is certainly possible that there would be no tariffs or quotas in an EU-UK free trade agreement 3/

1) A reminder: a transition (or implementation, now used synonymously) will be needed, as there will not be a UK-EU agreement ready the day after Brexit.
2) What is currently negotiated is a framework for such a deal, the realy deal can only be done after Brexit. As this needs time, the transition is supposed to fill the gap.

A pre-dinner thread on the Customs Union, Customs Partnership and MaxFac options which I discussed this morning on @RidgeOnSunday
1) This never-ending circular discussion on customs union is painful. The question should have been settled during the referendum. When the leaders of Leave campiagn were talking about separate trade deals with US,Japan,China,Oz - they were talking of life outside a Customs Union
2) I watched back @michaelgove's iconic interview with Faisal Islam and he talks of "taking back control" of trade policy and someone deciding our trade with Britain's interests in mind not the EU28. No one can credibly watch that and think the plan was to stay in a customs union
