AG opinion: Dutch law on family reunion too strict on integration test for non-EU family members of Dutch citizens
NB: Dutch government unilaterally chose to apply EU law on non-EU family reunion to its own citizens (otherwise EU law wouldn't apply to them)

1/ Three things to unpack here:
a) academic freedom
b) conduct towards students
c) journalists behaviour
2/ Academic freedom must include the freedom to say unpopular or unfashionable things. Equally it includes my freedom to express my view that "homosexuality is bestiality" is a view which only a tedious reactionary buffoon could hold.
3/ Universities are environments where students should be exposed to different points of view, even if they strongly disagree with those views. The point is to develop skills of assessing arguments and evidence.

3/ As for rolling over existing FTAs: even if they are all in place on time with identical terms, the UK trading position will be worse because the rules of origin will change, ie goods partly produced in the UK may no longer count as EU goods

The first item I’d like to point out, is that a better term we should use would be undocumented immigrant. “Illegal alien” creates and perpetuates the stigma that these people are inherently bad, or criminal. The reality is that they are just seeking a better life.
Probably the biggest misunderstanding is that everyone should simply just immigrate legally, when in reality there’s nothing simple about it. There are very specific and restrictive criteria one must meet in order to immigrate to the U.S. legally.

3/Specifically, the immigration law already gives a low level @CBP or @ICEgov bureaucrat unfettered power to order someone removed fr the US "without further hearing or review" unless the person indicates an intention to apply for asylum or a fear of persecution. INA 235(b)(1);

Okay here’s the thing. Most of the refugees I know don’t like to talk about it, but watching the inhumanity of this #immigration policy makes me want to mention a couple things. I was one of those kids clinging to his mom, seeking asylum... (1/16)
I spent five years (5-10) sleeping under my bed and soiling myself with anxiety. If my mom was less than 15 minutes late coming home, I would enter a full physical panic that she had been taken (she was once by the secret police in our country).
My dreams were almost entirely narratives of watching my parents taken and killed. And you have to understand, once we left our country, I didn’t leave my mother’s side for three years. I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if I’d been put in those cages.
