David Davis’ allies tell me he’s on the same page as Greg Clark, who made his softest ever brexit speech at yesterday’s Times CEO summit.

Tbh I’m a bit confused by this assertion - backed up with bits of DD speeches - but obviously delighted with such outbreaks of harmony
Clearly if DD can unite around Greg Clark’s vision of Brexit then everything is solved
Oh no! But now all is not well elsewhere in brexit land (aka DexEU)

One department. SO MANY different Brexit positions.

I love DexEU - the most post modern department there ever been, fighting with itself, with its officials , with the rest of government and glorying in its own euthanasia with all that means for incentives and career structures

Amber Rudd told Cabinet:

“History will take a dim view of a Cabinet that presses ahead with No Deal. We have to face world in which we find it, not as we wish it to be and we have to deal with the facts as we find them.”
In response to Sajid Javid pointing out that under No Deal we wouldn’t be able to uphold Dublin agreement and send people back, Amber made clear that, as a former Home Sec, we’d be less safe as a country.
Amber Rudd added:

“More than ever we need to find the centre, reach across the House and find a majority for what will be agreed. Anything will need legislation.

“I want us to proceed with Brexit, I want to find the will of the House.”

Tory pro-remain rebels have been plotting to scupper government timetable - and forcing meaningful vote for *THIS THURSDAY*

One minister last night gave it 50/50 chance of success

BUT

Appears to have been scuppered by the government business motion which can't be amended
Remain rebels were going to argue that the business motion being put by government was similar to previous one - therefore you could say 3 of the 5 days of debate had already taken place

... meaning it would happen on Thursday night
Labour would have joined in this effort

Some in government wanted it to come foreward too

But apparently this programme motion is unamendable, sources say.

In today’s Times I do a roundup of what people across Westminster - and beyond - are saying at the start of the new term.

1. The meaningful vote is set to be either on Tue Jan 15 or Wed Jan 16.

A decision hasn’t been made yet

It partly depends on whether the Commons sits next Friday and Tories have a three line whip to attend the brexit debate - which is unusual
2. Theresa May wants to focus briefing on domestic issues - the NHS? - this weekend

I’m told one advanced plan is for May to appear on the @AndrewMarr9 on BBC 1 on Sunday to launch the 10 year NHS plan, spelling out how the ££ announced over the summer will be spent.

1) In all the anger of "will of the people being thwarted" its probably worth remembering that our various #Brexit MP Vote Leave leaders have achieved precisely zero since the referendum, and have failed in every single task they set themselves

No wonder we're in this mess
2) Johnson was an international joke as Foreign Secretary, David Davis conceded at every stage with the EU before finally finding an excuse to resign, Gove hid from any important Brexit role, Leadsom & Grayling support May's deal whilst obviously hating it
3) Fox travelled the globe but came back without even a whiff of a promise of a substantial trade deal

Hannan has simply shuffled off, Stuart resigned her seat as soon as she could, Raab was essentially Brexit secretary in absence

Even Mogg blew it when he tried to stage a coup

OK as a remainer I now agree to get behind #Brexit but it must be the #Brexit promised by vote leave for none other is the will of the people
There must be not only £350mpw for the NHS but the numerous other spending promises made by Johnson Gove et all must be honoured

Having been accused of “No attempt at serious analysis” of David Davis’s speech yesterday, let’s do some then, shall we.

The headline quote from the speech - trailed by the UK Government *before* it was delivered - was to not “putting politics above prosperity”.

To even choose such a line is odd. The UK Brexit referendum was a vote to do *precisely* that.

Whether right to put politics above prosperity is every individual’s call to make, but it is pretty hard to say the economic case won the referendum.

But to make that the centre piece of a speech to an intelligent audience in Germany is embarrassing.
