Gonna start a thread to chart my kids' introduction to tabletop roleplaying games. This is a good place to start that thread, so:
What's remarkable is that the spread of ages -- 16 down to 4 -- isn't as dispositive of the ability to role play as one might imagine.

What's sadly not remarkable is my kids' proclivity to violence.
Example: After attempting to befriend a goblin the party had captured after wiping out his band, accidentally skinning his friend alive (don't ask), accidentally wiping out his whole village (don't ask), and dragging him up and down two ladders, they rolled and succeeded!
However, #5 misunderstood the verb "to befriend" and grabbed her daggers to help the conversation along. The goblin panicked and fled.

Everyone immediately tried to kill him, reflexively, even the paladin. Ok, especially the paladin.
Faced with a rune-covered door, they only grudgingly allowed the thief to try to pick the locks on the door while the wizard deciphered the runes after they cut down a tree as a battering ram (caught fire on the runes) and then ... suggested using the goblin as a battering ram.
