Oh for pete's sake. usnews.com/news/best-stat…
Bullet micrstamping is not a real thing that exists in a production gun, and even if it did it would have exactly zero value for law enforcement and save zero lives. It's just a backdoor gun ban.
Common sense will reveal the flaw in the idea that microstamping can be used to trace crime guns. You don't even have to bring up reloading. Any teeny tiny mark that stamps a brass casing with a tiny number can trivially be filed off.
Sure, you can make it illegal to file off the microstamp mark, but unlike filing off a serial # it would be impossible to spot without disassembly & close, magnified inspection of the firearm.
It is also the case that bullet microstamping is patented & proprietary & owned by one company: NanoMark. That idiotic CA legislation was a big win for them & their investors, I guess. It basically mandated the use of their exclusive tech in all production pistols.
But of course the gun industry is not gonna play ball. The idea is dumb and unworkable (even just firing the gun a whole lot would wear down the stamp), and nobody is going to give NanoMark the satisfaction of licensing their bad idea.
And if one gun company were to break ranks and license this travesty, it would be a death sentence. They'd never sell another gun outside CA, and probably most CA gun buyers would boycott, too.
This CA microstamping foolishness is a prime example of why nobody wants to see a smart gun on the market. Everyone is very rightly worried that whatever smart gun tech catches CA's eye would find its way into legislation, whether it works or not.
