Alright Ladies and Gentlemen. Gather 'round the campfire because uncle Brutus has another story (thread) to tell you! Be sure to spread the campfire to your followers!
This story is about a king, whose loyalties and priorities were not where they should be. A story about a man whose only love was created by money, food and power
Our story begins with a man. I could call him a king, which he was, but to call him a king would bring a certain level of respect and royalty to him, of which he had none.
This king, bearing the name Tantalus, was the son of the God Zeus. The most powerful god on Mount Olympus. As a son of Zeus he was allowed to sit at the dinner table of the gods and ate food that we could only dream of.
Tantalus was a good man in his youth and an honest one at that. However, all the power and wealth changed him. He had become different... Inside of him was an always growing hunger for power, wealth and everything that comes with it
After being in the presence of these powerful beings long enough he began to grow bold. He began stealing from the gods and gave the stolen treasures to the humans. Not only did he steal from the gods but he also gave away all their secrets to the humans
The gods noticed this of course but were too curious to see what Tantalus would try next. They could destroy him with a snap of their fingers but they waited and observed
This way he even betrayed his own father, Zeus. Leader of the gods and god of lightning. A normal person wouldn't want to anger the god of lightning but Tantalus was a bit different from the others so to say.
Tantalus grew bolder and bolder and even questioned the omniscience of the Gods. This would be his final mistake: He invited all the gods over to his house for a beautiful meal.
He butchered his own son, Pelops, cooked him, and served him to the Gods. Only one god, Demeter, ate from the meat before the gods circled Tantalus and spoke to him: "YOU THOUGHT WE WOULDN'T NOTICE, DIDN'T YOU?!" they yelled at him, showing their true power.
With a snap of his finger, Zeus sent him to the Underworld where he would be cursed forever. Forever he would have to stand in a small lake with an apple tree growing right next to the shore. Its branches with juicy apples hanging right above Tantalus.
Every time he would try to grab an apple however, the tree would move out of reach. Every time he would try to drink the water of the lake, the water would move away from him.
This was Tantalus' curse. A curse given to a man whose whole life had been filled with the most wonderful dinners and entertainment now had to live an eternal life in hunger and poverty.
This story is probably the best reason to stay humble in life. You might just end up in the Underworld.
