I was told on Thursday that Davis was looking unconvinced at the prospect of selling this deal in EU capitals - as he would have had too. That having been humiliated by PM bypassing Dexeu, it was “utter humiliation” to have had Chequers Brexit plan developed by PM’s adviser...
Other eurosceptic sources say as a side point that Davis was unimpressed by Number 10’s antics, which he only discovered after leaving Chequers, around booking taxis whilst they didnt have their mobile phones
Last week people that know him well thought he was going to resign, that he looked “resigned”, and that he was restrained only by the thought that if he resigned, the rest of the Dexeu team would, and thus the Government might fall at a delicate moment
Exchange of letters with PM coming “shortly”
This is what I wrote just ahead of Chequers predicting ‘Blood on the carpet” re Davis:

“I think there could be a leadership challenge this week.. everyone thinks May would survive confidence vote... Let’s see” says one Tory Brexiter parliamentarian
Hearing that there was a very difficult briefing at Number 9 Downing St with Tory Brexiter MPs disputing with PM’s top staff that the whole Cabinet did agree to the Chequers statement
.. some fruity language aimed by Tory Brexiters in direction of Number 10 briefers on this issue, I’m told - real anger as MPs argue that activists and members rail against Chequers agreement
Here is David Davis resignation letter
It’s a pretty devastating letter
“Progressive dilution” of original Cabinet agreement to diverge..
Backstop omitted strict conditions I requested
“Leading to at best a weak negotiating position and possibly an inescapable one”
parliamentary control will be “illusory”
Here is PM’s 3 page response to Davis punchy resignation letter:
PM to Davis: “I do not agree with your characterisation” of Chequers proposal
Last tweet - and its an ominous one - I have just been reminded by a Tory MP that the Foreign Secretary has so far made no public statement in support of the Chequer’s proposal, unlike, Gove, Leadsom & Fox.
