Arrived at #Wetherspoons in MCR. Tim Martin arrives 10 mins late & tells us "he is going to give us a talk". I thought this was supposed to be a #Brexit debate? 🤔 "Metropolitan elites are pushing for a deal we don't need & if we crash out on #NoDeal we will avoid paying £39bn"
I just had to point out to Tim that it is our own government who hasn't been implementing EU laws on controlling migration and hasn't properly documented #EUcitizens living in the UK, as they do in other EU countries.
He just admitted he needs to go back and "check his books." 🙄
This woman quite rightly pointing out that if we don't pay the £39bn financial obligation... then who else is going to pay @Nigel_Farage's pension? 🤔 Tim says his research hasn't led him to any answers.
Now advocating crashing out on WTO rules. "If we stop charging tarrifs on avacado and New Zealand wines then it won't mean less tax revenue for the UK government because all that money goes to #Brussels" (and presumably that has no reciprocal benefit to us) 🙄
.@MCR4EU doing a grand job apparently Tim hasn't been met with this opposition anywhere else in the country. 1 lady pointing out the amazing free trade deal the #EU has just signed with Japan & a Leaver responds "we were doing fine before we joined, we'll be fine when we leave."
The #gammons are utterly furious at the "Remoaners" who have gatecrashed Tim's "Talk" .... ( It says "debate" on the promo). 🙄 So they've had their photos taken with Tim and left.
Tim Martin ended the debate saying he could "see why it's hard being a politician". He then invited the Brexiters (only) to come with him upstairs so they could have their cosy self-reinforcing chat without interference from pesky Remainers 🙄 #StopBrexit

1/ I've just spent today catching up with an old school friend I haven't seen since last Christmas. She is in her final year studying medicine at uni - she's a smart girl. Yet, she told me that she is bored to tears by Brexit and she's sick of hearing about it on the news.
2/ She said she's stopped listening to Radio 4 because all she ever hears about the #IrishBackstop. She admitted she didn't know what it is, but is sick of hearing every man & his dog interviewed for their opinion. She prefers listening to "calming music" on radio 3 instead
3/ classic example of media boring people to death with politico's opinions rather than providing simple, factual information.

1/ So despite the check-in staff at MCR airport being very entertained by the #BollockstoBrexit stickers on my passport, my case got pulled out at security and I was ordered to remove them because they are "offensive"🤔 (Personally I think #Brexitbis more offensive than bollocks)
2/ I objected pointing out that "bollocks" had been determined not to be offensive in a court of law. The member of staff didn't believe, so I told her to look up the Sex Pistols album "never mind the Bollocks". She told me she "wasn't a sex pistols fan"🙄 completely irrelevant.
3/ I told her there was no legal requirement to remove the stickers and she was impeding on my freedom of speech. She threatened to call airport police to deal with the situation & accused me of wasting security staff time. I told her she was the one making unnecessary demands.

#Brexit is more in doubt today than it was yesterday, more in doubt last week than it was last year. Opposition to it has grown slowly but steadly

2) The BBC's Nick Robinson put out this blog in April 2017, explaining the duty of the national broadcaster. The referendum was over, Remain was no longer an option and there was therefore no requirement for the BBC to report on anything other than variations of #Brexit
3) This judgement, that Remain was dead, was certainly suspect 18 months ago. Today, with #PeoplesVote on everyone's lips and the Brexit plan in tatters it appears to be a remarkable failure from the BBC news team, who have failed in their duty to inform in a balanced fashion

1) Corbyn, #Brexit & facing reality - thread
Since this was posted there's been several variations from his supporters on why his responses were "reasonable", which in turn illustrate how far they are happy to put party before country, and Corbyn before party
2) the question, as a reminder, was very simple "do you (personally) believe we'll be better or worse off after #Brexit?"
One response is "he answered this"
He absolutely didn't, he waffled & none of his 6 answers can be interpreted as "yes" or "no"
3) "but Labour are pushing for the best deal/2nd ref/it's a negotiating position"

These may or may not be true, but they are irrelevant as to why Corbyn didn't answer the question - he was asked about his personal position

1/ a short thread on “my family are nice & voted Brexit”.

2/ remainers talk about the racist or gammon leave voter. But a minority of voters are racist & while you do see angry middle aged men on @bbcquestiontime they’re a small subset.

So my leave voting family - they are nice - why did they vote brexit?

The answer may surprise you..
3/ talking with family in depth on #brexit these last few weeks they didn’t mention any new law making powers, nor that much on the supposed £350m a week we’ll get back - they never thought they’d see much of it. Even immigration wasn’t really as important topic as some assume...

Post-Brexit, the idea is to put EU citizens in their place by stopping free movement. Free movement bothers Brexiters because it means foreigners come on an equal footing, as I've argued here 3/

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
