Very good story about Brexit consultancy contracts from @AdamParsons1 and @TomBoadle

My understanding was BCG and Mckinseys ones were to work up rejected plans for New Customs Partnership and Max Fac to test them with very sceptical manufacturers (under gagging clauses ofc)...
Essentially, the Government paying many millions to external consultants to tell them it was going to take years to prepare customs etc, but also trying to square circle of its own red lines on Brexit with keeping frictionless trade.
Plenty of people were telling the Government, often under NDA, for free, that such plans were unworkable...

PM tells Commons “whatever version of the future agreement you want from Norway to Canada, will require a withdrawal agreement”. Suggesting that both those rather different options still possible.
“Over the next 24 hours give this deal a second look.. when the history books are written people will ask ‘did we deliver on vote to leave?’ Or ‘did we deliver for the economy and security?’ Or ‘did we let the British people down?’,” PM concludes to MPs.
“A divided government has delivered a botched deal in vague outline” Corbyn says, if the deal is rejected tomorrow its clear “its time for a General Election and a new Government”

1/ The Government has now officially published it's White Paper on the future relationship with the EU. Haven't had a chance to read it fully yet (it is almost 100 pages), but a few quick pick ups. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…
2/ First up, on goods harmonisation. Britain will sign a treaty upfront guaranteeing to align with EU rules. But parliament will be responsible for passing those rules into British law. Sounds an awful lot like the Norwegian model often dubbed 'fax democracy'.
3/ Speaking of Norway, this joint committee stuff is all starting to look pretty Scandinavian too, with a dash of Ukraine for good measure. Not sure Brexiteers will be very happy about this level of ECJ involvement.

The 'third way' is now the new thing in the #Brexit debate. Like No.10 suddenly discovered something last weekend after two years of trying.

On the upside, a 'third way' carries implicit acknowledgement that the first two ways (the MaxFax and the New Customs Partnership) cannot solve the need for a border in the Irish Sea, if May wants to leave Customs Union and Single Market.

So what might the 'third way' be? /2
It will be a 'news customs arrangement' (which is code for a customs union, probably sugared by the idea that it's 'temporary' and only a bridge to the 'future' when technology (block chain blah) works and the 'new customs partnership) comes to fruition. /3

Fact, fiction and speculation in Brexit negotiations. A brief thread aiming at clarity given that there seems to be rather a lot of confusion about, and media stories are often not helping 1/
Start point. What is currently on offer from the EU. An FTA negotiation. Conditional on the Withdrawal Agreement containing a backstop that ensures no border on the island of Ireland. This is what the EU believes is realistic based on UK red lines 2/
The UK has responded with a proposal for a temporary customs arrangement so the backstop is not just for Northern Ireland. It has recognised this paper will need to be supplemented by one on regulatory arrangements 3/ assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

The Brexiter favourite Max Fac - would cost business between £17 and £20bn a year

- that's almost 1% of GDP

- just for filling in forms

200m export consignments at an average cost of £32.50 each = £6.5bn (times two because two way traffic)

plus around £4 to £7bn of rules of origin compliance from filling in other forms

1/ The more I think about it, the more the way 🇪🇺 has manoeuvred 🇬🇧 on #Brexit transition is masterful.
2/ In the immediate aftermath of the referendum, debate in 🇬🇧 revolved around WHEN #Article50 would be triggered, not consequences of doing so. 🇪🇺 could live with 🇬🇧 triggering in March 2017, as that gets 🇬🇧 out before EP 🗳 2019.
3/ Having triggered, 🇬🇧 wasted time with an early election, and then by time May made her Florence speech in September, even she realised time was short. Hence transition.
