The problem with having no principles is you forget that a “what he did isn’t bad because [technicality]” argument operates at cross-purposes with a “what about OTHER people who do the bad thing?” argument, and oops you wind up making both points at once. 
To Republicans it’s important not to judge based on 20 years ago when it comes to defending a serial sexual abuse cover-up, but it’s VERY important to judge based on 20 years ago when it comes to promoting your ethnic cleansing program.
