Ever see a conf get shut down & wonder "🤔 But it was running so smoothly! Why'd they stop!?"

The organisers were shit umbrellas protecting the attendees/speakers/etc from all the shit flying at the conference.

And there's a lot of shit flying around!
- Sponsors pull out
- Speakers don't show up
- A/V equipment breaks
- The recording fails
- Swag doesn't turn up
That fire hose of shit gets focused on the organisers.

Great organisers take it all on the chin (ewww), do their best to mitigate the impact of each little thing, and keep the show running.
Ever see an organiser give an intro talk at the start, then they disappear completely for the rest of the conf?
They've gone into shit umbrella mode! They're running around so you can enjoy the conference.
Imagine doing all this work to setup a conference, only to have to deal with all of this shit on the day of, not getting to enjoy all your hard work. Imagine how that must make the organisers feel after just one or two conferences.

They feel like shit.
This is why.
This is why organisers get burnt out.
This is why even good conferences get shut down.

Because of shit umbrellas.

Hey, Bank; you must insert a back door so I can access their accounts. And you can't tell anyone."

Now there's a huge gaping fucking hole in the fence around our online banking for anyone (not just Fuckwit Policeman #1) to gain access to our bank accounts.
Here's another one: some bright spark is inevitably going to ask Apple to make a back door into their iPhones.

I've always felt there was something wrong / silo'd about the way big companies work, which crippled their ability to grow.

In my teams which were speciality focused, a culture of "throw it over the fence" naturally emerged - each speciality has a strong silo surrounding them, often with the (well intentioned) blessing of managers ("Don't talk to the developers, you'll break their concentration")
There's a tension between what the individual (maybe even the entire specialist team) wants to achieve and what the business wants to achieve, eg; "perfectly architected, bug free code" vs "grow monthly recurring revenue".

It's only been a week, but I've already started to realise just how badly even mildly toxic work environments can drag one down over 3 years.
I'm proud that I was able to shield that toxicity from my team, but that meant I was the one absorbing all of it.

Just a little bit here, an offhand comment there, a dismissal of my skills on that day, and a lack of support from managers on another. Little things.
While it was happening, it was "Just another day", nothing big to report, no one was upset, no arguments (there _were_ those days, of course, but they were rare), it wasn't remarkable.

It’s a dumb idea to shut down your business during public holidays and weekends, especially businesses that don’t have other channels of selling like website, telephone order etc.

If your customers cannot reach you, they can’t buy from which means you can’t make money.

If your business/shop is not open and you don’t have other channels of selling like a website, then you can’t make money and your business will collapse.
This means that the period you are shut, you are not making money.

Hark unto me.

Let’s do some calculations.

How many weeks/weekends do we have in a year? 52. Saturdays and Sundays 52 times is 104.

Let’s add public holidays and maybe strikes.

Maybe we will have 120 days.

This surveillance tech is deployed at Sabarimala currently with Artificial Intelligence based high-res cameras fitted onto drones synced with various databses and biometric profiles under what they call "Predictive Policing" - stopping crime before it starts or future crimes.
Under Predictive Policing Hot Spot analysis police personnel will analyze & predict geographical areas of increased crime on basis of crime data. It will process all patterns relating to time of occurrence, exact locations, even shops, hotels, bars or other establishments.
Detectives will study social & infrastructural environment of a location & its local demography. Analysis will also be made of such things as local weather conditions, days on which offences are committed, whether it was around pay-day etc. But how they know its your pay-day? :)

 Key similarity: Brexiters are once again setting the news agenda, driving the news cycle. Or, perhaps more accurately, they are engaging in a highly successful rearguard operation: disrupting & shifting the news focus away from where it would otherwise be.

 During EUref campaign, they talked about the cost of EU membership & linked it to NHS under-funding. We proved their figures were wrong & called out their lies. On facts/logic, we won the argument hands-down. But the debate was all about their issues. And look what happened.
