Which is to say @Paula_White is right about Jesus not breaking the law in seeking safety in Egypt and WRONG about every brave soul seeking safety in America when she calls them “illegal”.
I invite everyone, including @Paula_White to repeat after me:

“Asylum Seeker means someone like me, only they need safety.”

Repeat this phrase until you are ready to do unto those needing safety as you would want someone to do unto you in the same position.

I did not expect the ending of #BlackPanther to hurt with Coates' almost nihilistic realism that I first felt at beginning of "Between the World and Me", but it did. That, the Tim Hardaway reference and Ryan Coogler's nod to Spike Lee's spinning dolly cam. 👌🏽🏆
I wish you could have been there for the opening in my neighbourhood with my son and I surround by other locals and heard the excitement from local aboriginal kids as the movie started. Their identification meant they shared in the representation and it moved me deeply.
With the release of #BlackPanther film I want to address some important but forgotten realities of the Black Panther Party (in 🇺🇸 & 🇦🇺) and confront some of the lies. The history has much to teach those of us committed to nonviolent organising for justice.

At 10AM today, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan (@CBP_McAleenan) will be appearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee for an important oversight hearing. I'll be livetweeting the hearing and pulling out any important parts of the testimony. judiciary.senate.gov/meetings/overs…
McAleenan has already made his written testimony available. While I haven't had the chance to read it carefully, one very important thing to note is that he doesn't mention family separation or metering once. judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/… …
The hearing begins with Chairman Grassley praising the "important work" of CBP, describing it as a law enforcement agency. Grassley says he was impressed on private meeting with McAleenan about all the work he's done protecting migrants, which is... debatable at best.

Top Myths About #Asylum and why you should care:

Myth: Asylum seekers should file at US consulates in their home countries.

Reality: Asylum can only be sought at the border or inside the US. US consulates do not accept asylum applications.
Myth: Asylum seekers must present themselves at a port of entry.

Reality: The law (8 USC 1158) specifically says a person may apply for asylum whether they enter legally or not.

They can be technically prosecuted for unlawful entry, but that doesn't prevent asylum.
Myth: Asylum is only for political persecution, not for fear of gangs and terrorists.

Reality: There is NO requirement in the law that an asylum seeker's fear be politically based.

I've won many gang and terrorist related cases.

Please pay attention to this. Rs have tried to undermine the USPS for decades. If Trump kills the USPS, it'll destroy the business model for most of the indie artists/creators you love and shatter the Kickstarter/crowdfunding/indie internet store model.
I know we all like to complain about the post office. But on the record, I love the USPS the same way I love public libraries. Essential public services that vastly improve the lives of millions of everyday people.
Can't tell from the article what Trump and Mnuchin have planned here for the USPS. But you know it isn't good. Here's how Rs kneecapped the USPS in 2006, saddling it with requirements no other business has and forcing it into the red: huffingtonpost.com/karl-frisch/po…

2/ Important context: As head of @TheJusticeDept, the Attorney General has final say over all cases before the administrative #immigration courts. AG may snatch a case away from the Board of Immigration Appeals anytime and decide it himself by directing BIA to refer it to him.
3/ Here is the 2014 BIA holding--upholding precedent from 1989--which the AG was so intent on getting to his own desk. It may not mean much to anyone who had the good sense not to go to law school, but take a shot. (No, really: *take an actual shot* and give it a try.)
