Today’s Brexit White Paper: usual misleading line that Irish citz after Brexit have rights to live in UK because of Common Travel Area.

Only if they came from Ireland...

Last month, UK proposed that all *current* Irish citz resident in UK can apply for indefinite leave to remain under its ÈU citz settlement scheme >
But UK still needs clear law on rights of residence etc of Irish citz who come to UK in future, arriving from *outside the CTA*. If this isn’t in first version of Immigration Bill, alarm bells need to be rung. / ENDS

“Prevention” is what led to this (small number of) people risking their lives. But sure, let’s spend more money on that.
“Prevention” smashed up the Calais migrant town, where migrants had better chance of informed choices - where they could share info & be helped by informed NGOs.

Because immigration enforcers see info sharing as a threat, not a protection.
“Prevention” requires UK visas from people from countries where persecution is rife. So they can’t use regular planes, trains, boats or busses.

I am pleased an agreement has been reached between EU & UK negotiators on a draft #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty. While I welcome these developments, Brexit is not our policy & is something we regret. However we respect the vote of the people of the UK.
Our national priorities are:
- protecting the Good Friday Agreement.
- maintaining the Common Travel Area & related benefits
- reaffirming our place at the heart of the EU
- protecting trade, jobs and the economy
On each of these, we have reached a satisfactory outcome today.
Avoiding a hard border has proven to be one of the most difficult challenges. What has become know as “the backstop” is now fully spelt out in the Withdrawal Agreement. The backstop would apply “unless and until” a better solution is agreed.
