I receive the claim ‘carbs are not an essential nutrient’ on pretty much a weekly basis.

Apparently this mean they are unhealthy.

It is a misleading one when it comes to public health advice & here’s why.

While this may be true that individuals in, say, a lab setting or following a strict diet won’t die without carbs, it is profoundly untrue on a global population scale.

It is physically impossible for the planet to produce enough calories to feed humanity without carbs.
Even if we made a Star Trek style food replicator to magically make us all the meat and fat we wanted, not being ‘essential’, doesn’t mean they are ‘unhealthy’.

Berries & leafy greens for example aren’t ‘essential’ for survival.
Finally, carbs kinda are ‘essential’ (depending on your definition) as fibre is a carb. It protects against some leading causes of premature death.
Finally, eating is about far more than just providing us with ‘essential’ chemicals that we would die without.

Frankly you could get that from a tube.

It’s also about enjoyment, culture and social interaction.

So eat and enjoy the food you can!
