Starting a long-term thread about losing your job, unemployment and what to do next. Each week, I’ll try to post tips, resources, ideas. Would love to hear your thoughts if you’ve dealt w/ this, as well as your strategies on coping. Thanks for helping me help others.🙏🏾#sreetips
They say adversity builds character. Having lost two high-profile jobs in 12 months, my character is now awesome.😊

Because I’ve been open about the body blow that’s unexpected job loss (and have allegedly bounced back), lots of folks regularly reach out to me.
Part of my story was told in dozens of media pieces, including this @qz one by @jenniavins (we walked across Central Park together): bit.ly/sreeqz
And this @pbs @NewsHour piece by @robenfarzad (he and crew followed me from 6:30 am to 7 pm): bit.ly/sreenewshour
And this @cjr exit interview by @CarlettSpike: bit.ly/sreecjr2016
And this @fastcompany interview by @nikitarbk: bit.ly/fastcompany2016 (a follow up to @jeffchu’s profile, bit.ly/fastcompany2015):
And this @bbc interview on the streets of Delhi: bit.ly/sreebbc

Job loss can happen anytime, to anyone at any level in any organization.
Job loss can happen no matter how well you’re doing your job.
Job loss can happen to you even if you’re doing everything asked of you. Even if your hitting every goal.
Job loss can happen even if you’ve had nothing but glowing performance reviews.
(Of course, many people lose jobs simply because they’re awful at their jobs, but that’s another story.)
Nothing prepares you for job loss. It can come all of a sudden, or you might read the writing on the wall.
Shock, disbelief, anger, a sense of betrayal, overwhelming sadness are all common reactions.
If you’re older, figuring out next steps after job loss includes accepting that AGEISM IS REAL. When I was job hunting, I encountered it, even though I thought I was a cutting-edge digital guy. Even at an org led by one of the most liberal and progressive people in America.
Some ageism in the workforce is subtle. Some is in your face. And some is so new, you didn’t know it was possible. Read @JuliaAngwin’s 2017 thread and investigation on ageism:
This tweet captures the unexpected problems that come along with job loss in America. 40K likes tell you, alas, @thatJaneNg hit a chord.
So what to do if you’ve lost your job or about to lose it?

@PaulGlader has some upbeat ideas. bit.ly/forbesjoblost
Among @PaulGlader’s 9 ideas on what to do if you lose your job is to go on walks. I did this a lot the summer I lost my job and do it to this day. Great exercise and networking.🚶🏾

My rules for adding people on @LinkedIn:

1. People I already know.
2. People I should know.
3. People I’d like to know.
Always try to customize the introductory connection message on @linkedin.

Be honest and direct. But not like this. 🙈
Great resource for @linkedin: @patriciakitchen’s guide. bit.ly/LinkedInResour…
To get new ideas about using @linkedin, follow @evanskathleen1, enterprise relationship manager at LI. She’s just relaunched her Twitter presence, so you can watch her improve her use of Twitter, as you improve your use of LI.
Of course, it’s not possible for every strong applicant to get a job that looks perfect for them, but it would be nice if employers and HR depts would send more than standard rejection notes to strong candidates. Here’s an example of thoughtlessness:
Your network and your network’s network are the key, says @mmaltaisLA. BTW, she has a fabulous new job: LA-based consumer editor of @USATODAY! Congrats, Michelle, and thanks for sharing your story. All good wishes in the new role! Will be reading closely.
Almost all attention around immigration in America is now focused on the undocumented. But immigrants on work visas are also facing increased challenges that rarely get attention. As someone who was on a visa for years, I thought the situation couldn’t get worse. I was wrong.
