Asked if Trump really believes "no," Russia is not targeting the U.S. any more, Sanders says he was "saying no to answering questions," not on the question itself. (Sanders lies a lot and says a lot of ridiculous things, but this strikes me as plausible.)
This is the video. The context for Trump’s “no” wasn’t perfectly clear.
On Russia targeting the U.S., Sanders says, "The threat still exists, which is why we are taking steps to prevent it."
Sanders is now accusing the White House press corps of propagating the false claim that a White House official in a photo with Trump was the woman accused of being a Russian agent. Very few journalists made that claim, not sure if anyone in the press corps did.
Asked about business complaints about the impact of Trump's tariffs, Sanders claims he is "focused on long-term economic principles."
Asked why Trump fights with lots of world leaders but won't call out Putin "by name," Sanders says, "I think he has." (He hasn't.)
"To act like he hasn't been tough on Russia, to act like he hasn't called them out...is simply not true," Sanders says. Trump has very occasionally and passingly criticized Russia over Syria, but that's about it.
Asked about Trump's support for Putin's absurd proposal to help investigate his own military officers in exchange for Trump investigating Americans, Sanders says, "He didn't commit to anything...we've committed to nothing...it was an idea that they threw out."
Sanders: "I talked to the president" about his "no" - "he wasn't answering that question," he was saying "no," I'm not answering questions.
Sanders: Trump has "credibility," because when he sees that he has "misspoken," like he did by saying would when he meant wouldn't, he goes out and clarifies his error.
Asked why Trump took so long to "clarify," Sanders says it was "the very first chance he had in a public setting" following his arrival back in the U.S. (This is all, obviously, preposterous.)
Asked if Trump told Putin to stay out of U.S. elections, Sanders says, without saying yes or no or offering any support for the following sentence, "The president has made clear to Vladimir Putin that he should stay out of U.S. elections."
