Every time I tweet about food security I receive tweets along the line of: ‘We’ll just grow our own. Even if it’s in a window box!”

Here’s why people should know that this just isn’t a solution, in 3 tweets:
I grew 5kg of tomatoes on my tiny balcony last year. It took plenty time time, effort and a certain skill set. But I was so pleased!

That’s a pretty massive harvest for such a small space and I enjoyed every last one.
However, if I have my maths right that’s 0.0009% of my annual caloric needs.

Even in terms of our minimum 5-a-day requirement it’s like 0.16 of a serving.

I love growing my own. But let’s never underestimate the vital work farmers do. They literally keep us alive.
