On This Day. 1973: Richard Nixon refused to release White House tape recordings related to the Watergate investigation. The Senate Watergate committee and special prosecutor Archibald Cox had demanded that the president do. But Nixon refused, claiming executive privilege /1
The battle over the Watergate tapes would go on for another year, before the Supreme Court ruled, in a unanimous verdict, against Nixon. He would resign two weeks later - in August, 1974
