I just got back from the “abolish ICE” Portland camp. It’s become a sprawling parallel fortress society. The smell is memorable. Many rules (eg photography not allowed inside).
A bit of panic ensues when Portland Police finally go inside camp to post statements that space will be cleared. I followed them.
Sometime soon, the City of Portland will likely start clearing the anti-ICE/anti-borders camp (notices already posted more than 24 hours ago). In response, the camp has walled themselves off completely. They even have "wall guards" keeping watch. From the last hour:
Micah Rhodes, a Portland SJ activist arrested again for violating probation. Rhodes was convicted this year for sex crimes w/minors. I saw him last month at "abolish ICE" camp, where many minors & children are present. Don't know if incidents connected. oregonlive.com/portland/index…
This is something I witnessed. Non-white federal officers on duty to protect the Portland ICE office say they've been subject to racist & sexist verbal abuse from the "abolish ICE" protesters. oregonlive.com/expo/news/erry…
Occupy ICE PDX posted vid this morning of moment police finally entered the camp. “This is what happens when a fascist empire fucking sees people create something beautiful... they have to destroy it.”
After 6 weeks, the “abolish/occupy ICE” Portland camp is no more. Starting early this morning, dozens of cleaners quickly emptied most of the fortress. The strong smell of dried urine permeates the air. There is junk all around the former camp.
Majority will ignore this but I’ll put it out anyway: Please support me if you find what I do of value. Thank you. Patreon: patreon.com/AndyNgo Paypal: paypal.me/MrAndyNgo
The cleaning crew at the “anti-ICE” Portland camp included a “Rapid Response Bio-Clean” team. There were needles found on site.
Update: I just heard back from the mayor’s office. Biohazard clean-up at the Portland “Occupy ICE” camp is estimated to cost taxpayers $12,000.
Here's a @KGWNews report from earlier this week. Fearful residents in the area affected by the "occupy/abolish ICE" camp speak out. "They're destroying our neighborhood," says one woman. Protester says: "We can't get jobs. This is our job."
