Will America's shift to a majority-minority country be a good thing?

Most Democrats (85%), a majority of Independents (59%), and a substantial minority of Republicans (43%) say YES, it will.

This is pretty amazing result!!

If you think about it, this finding is pretty incredible.

This country is hurtling toward a demographic change that is UNPRECEDENTED in modern history, as far as I know.

And most Americans are EMBRACING that change!!
Many people will be tempted to focus on the partisan difference - the fact that "only" 43% of Republicans say a majority-minority country is a good thing.

But of COURSE the people who don't like demographic change are going to mostly cluster in one party. That's not news!!
The real news here is that the American experiment - the idea that you can build a society that is both diverse and free - is actually working.

I know with Trump in power it doesn't seem like it's working. And sure, it may still fail.

But it hasn't failed yet.
Lots of people will be tempted to use this poll as an occasion for bemoaning the horribleness and racism of the Republicans.

And that's fine. Trump and the Republicans are doing very bemoan-worthy things.

But this poll shows something much, much deeper than Trump.
Underneath the partisan warfare and the Twitter screeching and the bad feelings of this polarized age, America is fundamentally a society that embraces diversity.

Long after Trump is gone, that national character will remain.

Oh, just for fun, here's a post I wrote about this a few months back: bloomberg.com/view/articles/…
Here are Americans vs. Europeans, being polled about diversity:
Here's another poll showing Americans support diversity: nbcnews.com/politics/first…
Here's evidence showing that since 1990, white Americans have tended to move to racially diverse neighborhoods, and have tended to stay there (or to move to other equally diverse neighborhoods).

Here's evidence showing the relentless rise of interracial marriage in the United States: pewsocialtrends.org/2017/05/18/int…
In both word and deed, Americans have been supporting diversity more and more.

I continue to believe that the Trump movement is a fading rump. A last gasp, rather than an ominous new dawn.

I still think that you can crush the flowers, but you can't stop the spring.
