Trump and Corruption: district judge allows DC/Maryland Emoluments Clause suit against Trump to proceed. From @Fahrenthold @amarimow & @OConnellPostbiz washingtonpost.com/politics/feder…
Trump and Corruption: If Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke wants to make beer so badly, perhaps he should leave his job & go do that.
Trump and Corruption: Trump’s administration supports and supplies a vicious Saudi war against civilians in #Yemen while Saudis pour money into Trump hotels. By @Fahrenthold & @OConnellPostbiz washingtonpost.com/politics/at-pr…
Trump and Corruption: Bombshell @DanAlexander21 piece on Wilbur Ross in @Forbes — the Commerce Secretary has had, allegedly, a lot of stuff going on: stealing from employees, not divesting assets when required, & more. We’re talking millions of dollars here.
Trump and Corruption: “...refusal to execute domestic laws” — by Trump’s @CFTC . And @EPA . And @CFPB . And @usedgov . And more. Essential piece by @StevenMufson discusses Trumper retreat from enforcement in context of ideology... washingtonpost.com/outlook/what-h…
...”deconstruction of the administrative state,” which lends a patina of intellectual respectability to actions that have a more straightforward explanation — as their beneficiaries are most often interests able to lay a lot of money on the table. washingtonpost.com/outlook/what-h…
There is one apparent, honorable exception — @USDOL under @SecretaryAcosta — but only one. If you assume corruption in the Trump administration, you will rarely be disappointed. washingtonpost.com/outlook/what-h…
Trump and Corruption: Elliott Broidy, a former RNC Finance Deputy Chair (w/Trump fixer Michael Cohen) may have been operating w/o Trump’s knowledge. It’s possible. Would you bet that way? From @jdawsey1 @CarolLeonnig @nakashimae & @DevlinBarrett washingtonpost.com/politics/gop-f…
Trump and Corruption: there’s a lot of bad stuff on this thread I started six months ago. But @jimtankersley & @tackettdc remind us of the single most corrupt act associated with Trump and his party: last year’s tax bill. nytimes.com/2018/08/18/us/…
The tax bill was a financial windfall for Trump personally — how big a windfall we don’t know, because the Trumper Republican Congress won’t demand he release his tax returns. It was also a potent whiff of the fetid stink of corruption that pervades the whole Republican Party.
Big donors like the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson demand Congress reduce their taxes. Republicans in Congress scramble to comply — legislatively, it was about the only thing they got done last year. Donors reward them with money: thousands, tens of thousands, millions.
The tax bill was straight corruption all the way through. Corruption was its entire point. Trumper Republicans across the country will be running on it this fall. nytimes.com/2018/08/18/us/…
Trump and Corruption: @paulwaldman1 says Democrats are toying with a new argument for why they should be in charge after this November’s election. This is progress. washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-lin…
Trump and Corruption: NFL owners are terrified of becoming targets of a Trump Twitter barrage. Nike doesn’t seem as worried for some reason. Is this the reason?
Trump and Corruption: Thread from @RobertMaguire_ that surely requires little elaboration. The Republican Party & its donors have chosen, without opposition or even dissent, to participate in and protect Trump’s use of the Presidency to enrich himself.
Trump and Corruption: A milestone in the Trump and Corruption story. Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort pleads guilty to additional conspiracy & obstruction of justice charges arising from Robert Mueller’s investigation. By @joshgerstein @dsamuelsohn politico.com/story/2018/09/…
.....And there's a cooperation agreement! This had been in some doubt, with commentators (and Trump aides, speculating that Trump might use the Presidential pardon power to keep potential witnesses silent. Per @DevlinBarrett & @hsu_spencer washingtonpost.com/world/national…
Trump and Corruption: a handy survey, by Trump biographer Timothy L. O’Brien, one of the very few people to have seen Trump’s tax returns.
Trump and Corruption: Credulity mixed with an unworthy indifference when Trump began his Presidency by promising to separate himself from his businesses in this country & overseas. As @CREWcrew reminds us, he lied.
Trump and Corruption: It’s not unusual for prized US ambassadorships to go to major political donors. It is very unusual for them to be given as rewards for giving money to the President personally through his business. Per @burke_jason via @Fahrenthold
Trump and Corruption: Placed in this thread for ease of future reference (since last year’s tax cut included provisions benefiting Trump). Major NYT report by @DavidBarstow @susannecraig & @russbuettner on how Trump used tax evasion to build his fortune.
Trump and Corruption: @nytimes story presents voluminous evidence that Trump’s public narrative about how he made his money is not merely exaggerated, but wildly false. Kudos to authors for flagging “often-credulous reporting” by NYT and others.
Trump and Corruption: when Donald Trump first said, in 2015, he wouldn’t be releasing his tax returns during the Presidential campaign, I had one thought: Tax Cheat. Evidently it was correct, of him and his whole family. And we made him President.
Trump and Corruption: the Trump administration’s White America program may be one of the least corrupt things about it, in the sense that Trumper hostility to Hispanics especially is genuine. But donors to Trump still make out. From @CREWcrew
Trump and Corruption: Sheldon Adelson has given a lot of money to the Republican Party and to Trump, who as President has sought to help Adelson’s massive casino business. From @JustinElliott via @ProPublica President @dicktofel
Trump and Corruption: Trump revels in corruption, but he didn’t create it. @alexkotch (via @andrewperezdc of @MapLight) with a dark money story about the Charles Koch group Americans for Prosperity. We don’t know its funders, but candidates do. readsludge.com/2018/10/10/koc…
Trump and Corruption: this from @ABCWorldNews speaks for itself.
Trump and Corruption: Facing numerous investigations for improper use of @Interior department funds, Secretary Zinke retaliates by firing the acting inspector general there, bringing in a Trumper from Ben Carson's HUD, reports @IndefiniteWild outsideonline.com/2355936/zinke-…
Trump and Corruption: let’s just put this out there — @jameshohmann has a list of “Trump Doctrine” components, applicable to a normal administration. But do we have any reason to think No. 6 — Trump’s business interests w/Saudis — is not really No. 1? washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost…
.@threadreaderapp please unroll. Other readers please be aware this is a regularly updated thread. Corruption in the Trump administration will never end until it does.
Trump and Corruption: Trump intervened personally to block redevelopment of current @FBI HQ site near his Washington hotel, documents uncovered by House Oversight Committee Democrats show. This would keep competitors out. Report by @mattshuham at @TPM talkingpointsmemo.com/news/dems-want…
Trump and Corruption: I’m going to make a judgement call here & put this @colinkalmbacher story about Ivanka Trump’s possible exposure to wire fraud charges in the T&C thread. She wasn’t in the WH when offenses alleged took place, but she’s there now. lawandcrime.com/high-profile/l…
