A common question I get: how do I improve my style while I still have a bunch of weight to lose? Will I just be pissing away my money on new clothes?
My answer:
First, realize that we’re all still looking to improve our physiques (even those of us in great shape) so when you hit your goal weight don’t be surprised that you’ve still got work to do. It’s never ending.
Next, I suggest building your “temporary” wardrobe on simple basics like fitted t-shirts, polos, casual buttons up, jeans, chinos, and the like. All these items can be found inexpensively and can easily be replaced as you get into better and better shape.
This is where fast fashion retailers like the Gap, H&M, Uniqlo, Zara etc. come in handy. Basics like these are dirt cheap compared to 30-40 years ago. That’s what happens when you outsource the manufacturing of your clothing to countries like China, India, Bangladesh etc.
Next, I wouldn’t worry about investing in nicer suits, trousers, outerwear and the like. Especially if you have a lot of weight to lose. Wait until you hit a decent physique goal before investing in these pieces.
If you require to still dress up for work etc. you can pick up dressier items on sale at places like J.Crew Factory, Nordstrom Rack etc. You can even buy an inexpensive suit from a place like J.Crew Factory and have it tailored for a reasonable cost.
One area you can start investing in quality right away are shoes. You can totally upgrade your footwear right now.
Don’t use the current state of your physique as an excuse to not take action. Start working on building your physique and leveling up your style today. It takes time but if you put in the work the results will come.
