1) Monday morning. Going to your job. Sometimes it’s dull and repetitive. Sometimes it’s frustrating yes? You like some parts of your job more than others. Maybe it’s the people you work with, maybe it’s the monotony. Maybe it’s just that you’d rather have stayed in bed today.
2) Now imagine if you had impossible pressure placed on you to ALWAYS be happy in your job. Always empowered and fulfilled from it and at no point ever could you complain or let your guard down. At all times you must smile and trill about the joys of your job....
3) Because if you don’t. Your profession and livelihood will be yanked away from you. Your opportunity to pay bills, feed your kids and save for your retirement...gone
4) This is the pressure placed on sex workers every day. We are not allowed to have a bad day. We are not allowed to dislike anything about our job or our routine. Not only that our job is supposed to empower us, delight us, fulfill us and satisfy us every minute of every day.
5) NO job can do that. Even Oprah has shitty days. But when a sex worker admits to any normal feelings of mundaneness in their job we are instantly attacked by both clients and antis. This is unrealistic. This is impossible.
This standard that you hold us too is abusive.
6) If you have days that you don’t like your job so much, then I’m allowed that too. It doesn’t mean you want to quit your job. And neither do I.
Sex workers have so much projected on to them from all sides. We groan under the weight of these expectations.
Be realistic. Be kind.
