1. A new IPCC report attacks nuclear power as a key climate solution by promoting the notion that it risks nuclear weapons proliferation, may cause childhood leukemia, and destroys the natural environment.
2. “Nuclear energy,” write IPCC authors, “can increase the risks of proliferation, have negative environmental effects (e.g., for water use), and have mixed effects for human health when replacing fossil fuels.”
3. In fact, study after study over the last 40 years finds that nuclear is the safest way to make reliable electricity, and climate scientists found that nuclear energy has saved 1.8 million lives by preventing premature deaths from air pollution.

1/ So #Sweden has voted and the Swedish Social Democrats are the largest party by vote share again, as they have been in every election since 1917. Good right? Nope. The real story is that the far right Sweden Democrats are now kingmakers, a 'former' neo-nazi party w/ power.
2/ So what's happened? Well, in terms of broad brushstrokes and looking at the result in a wider European context, what's happening is that the far right, sometimes openly neo-nazi as with Germany's AfD are milking a historically latent European Christio-xenophobia.
3/ They are taking advantage of a flat economy in which wages haven't risen to match productivity and profit margins, in which housing, transport, food, medicines, and education are more expensive on average, even in Nordic social-capitalist models like Norway, Denmark, & Sweden.

There is a lot of debate about gun violence in schools right now, but I wanted to offer a perspective that may initially come across as insensitive, but I promise you, if you read the entire thread it will, hopefully, in the end, leave you a little relieved.
Let’s start with a question. Why do we care about school shootings?

That might sound like a strange and even callous question but stick with me for a minute before firing off an angry emoji at me or turning CAP LOCKS to stun!
From 2014-2017 there were 1333 mass shootings. Of those 1333 mass shootings “only” 8 were on school grounds. That’s 0.6% of all mass shootings. So, statistically, shouldn’t we focus attention on the other 99.4% of mass shootings?
