Given today has been indulgent — a rare chance to have a pub Sunday roast on my own with a book (Writing A Novel by @RichardNSkinner) in my rather excellent local, and now an Old Fashioned as I read on the sofa — I thought I’d share my Old Fashioned recipe/tips...
@RichardNSkinner This owes much to recipe from @markofrespect’s excellent but too short-lived @ShakenCocktails

You need:
- glass tumbler
- teaspoon
- bitters (details soon)
- agave/maple syrup
- bourbon/rye/whisky
- an orange / fresh cherries

First, fill a nice whisky tumbler with ice...
... then put in the bitters:

- 5 drops of orange bitters (I use Regans)
- plus 10 drops of aromatic bitters (I use Bitter Truth)

... next add the sweet:
- sometimes I use agave syrup
- or sometimes I use maple syrup (today)
Either way add two teaspoons...
... Now also add two teaspoons of the bourbon/rye (or Whisky)

Stir 16 times (apparently top bartenders swear by this number!)

Add more ice to fill the glass again.

Add another 8 teaspoons of bourbon.

Stir another 16 times, and add more ice again...
...finally garnish. I vary between...

1. Orange peel - using a peeler take a long strip, twist it over the glass to release some oils, now put it in the drink. Take a shorter bit of peel, twist it over drink again, now wipe around the inside and outside of glass rim

Or...
...
2. Cherries - take two fresh cherries (glacé are evil), score the skin into quarters with a sharp knife, drop into the drink and stir.

Your drink is ready! Find a good book, a comfy chair, sit back and enjoy!

Cheers :)
