The executive director of the NC Republican Party is making vague but dire threats against the authority of the democratically elected state Supreme Court. ⬇️
The NC GOP ED followed up by making his threat very much NOT vague, "reminding" everyone how many votes it takes to impeach Supreme Court justices
This is all about a lawsuit I wrote about yesterday. The GOP-controlled legislature approved misleading ballot language for constitutional amendments North Carolinians will vote on this fall; Dems sued to prevent this.
The constitutional amendments Republicans want voters to approve include
*A photo ID requirement for voters
*Stripping the (Democratic) gov of his constitutional authority to appoint the state's elections board and giving it to the (GOP-controlled) legislature
...*Giving the (GOP-controlled) legislature control over the pool of candidates that can be considered for judicial vacancies
*Lowering the cap on the income tax from 10 to 7 percent.
Believe it or not, though, this North Carolina GOP power-grab gets even more sinister.
The GOP's judicial appointment constitutional amendment has a loophole that allows the legislature to pass "other matters" not subject to gubernatorial veto when they're making judicial recommendations or appointments.
So, even if North Carolina Republicans lose their House or Senate supermajority this November, they'll still have a way to ram policies through without worrying about the gov's pesky check/balance.
Is anyone quite as good as North Carolina Republicans at being so evil? I'm hard-pressed to think of a fair comparison.
