1. Quick thread on the only recorded criminal arrest of a sitting U.S. president—made by a D.C. Police offering for speeding, a century and a half ago. washingtonpost.com/history/2018/1…
2. There’s a dearth of contemporary sources on the arrest—this and other accounts are retrospective. Here, for example, is an abbreviated version of the story from 1901. All the versions agree that the arrest was made by Officer William H. West.
3. The Evening Star’s account says that Grant was arrested, then released after posting the $20 fine. The other six drivers showed up in court to contest it; Grant did not, and so forfeited his $20. That’s a remarkable precedent.

A few thoughts about this Humanities article making the rounds

1) if declining humanities enrollments are due to misperception of low value, then WE need to do better job selling ourselves... #humcomm needs to be the new #scicomm

2) Humanities (and social sciences) departments need to reward public engagement that highlights the value and relevancy of our disciplines to modern society. We need to highlight to everyone what they can learn from our rigorous methods and nuanced approaches into humanity
3) Humanities departments need to adapt. The article points out that newer, identity related fields have been successful during this crisis (ethnic, gender, and cultural studies). These are still minor components of most traditional humanities departments' course offerings

1. В общем, олимпиады — это хороший социальный лифт и возможность поступить в топовый вуз. По ощущениям, в том же Гарварде примерно треть иностранных студентов — призеры/участники олимпиад. Примерно ещё одна треть — из крутых школ, вроде United World College.
1.5. Из нашей команды на международной математической олимпиаде 2002 года трое поступили на бакалавр в МИТ/Гарвард. Один учился в Сингапуре, пятый — в Казахстане, но недавно окончил PhD в Penn State и получил позицию на кафедре. Еще один окончил METU в Турции.
