At this point nobody with any sense expects Trump to BE a decent human being, but it’s downright bizarre how fervently he resists even *going through the motions of pretending*, even when it’s both obviously in his interests and essentially costless to do so.
He’s somehow both insanely obsessed with optics and seemingly unable to foresee hilariously obvious scenarios like “If you behave like a petulant prick toward a dead veteran, you will look terrible and ultimately be shamed into making a grudging show of respect anyway.”
It’s like he missed some critical phase of socialization most of us go through around age 5 where we learn it’s easier for everyone if you just smile & thank Grandma for the socks you didn’t want, & is unable to learn it now despite how routinely it creates needless headaches.
God knows it’s not some general aversion to insincerity. He pivoted from dick-waving to ass-kissing with Kim Jong Un in a heartbeat; you’d think he could manage the same trick with McCain.
