THREAD - One of the experts testifying today: Dr. Donald Anderson, senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and current director of the U.S. National Office for Harmful Algal Blooms. (To abbreviate today, we'll call the harmful algal blooms HABs)...
According to Anderson: "Climate change will almost certainly influence HABs since many critical processes governing [their] dynamics such as temperature, water column structure, upwelling and water circulation patterns, and nutrient inputs are influenced by climate."
"Freshwater HABs are expected to worsen as temperatures rise, as the causative species are strong competitors at high temperatures."
"...climate change is expected to exacerbate the HAB problem in some regions and shift species distributions geographically."
One particularly problematic area is the Arctic, Anderson reports.
" There is now clear evidence that multiple HAB toxins are present in the Arctic food web at dangerous levels, and a strong likelihood that the problems will worsen."
