My nephew, H, turned 1 & I feel like I should share his story with y'all. Somehow I'm sure so many people, unfortunately, could relate to this story. Because the cast in his story is the same people who live and breathe around us, destroying other people for material love #Thread
One year ago when H was being born in a hospital room, I was standing right next to my sister hearing her cry in pain. As her screams muffled, I heard baby H’s voice for the first time as he cried in the nurse’s arms. I welcomed him to the world with the cheeriest hello ever.
I was the first person to hold him and feed him his first ever meal; a quarter of teaspoon of honey. H, ever since, has been nothing but a source of joy for us. He has become best friends with mummy, nana, nani, khala, maamo.
Now y'all might be wondering why there is no mention of his father here. That’s because he left him after impregnating my sister. So from now onward, I’ll call him a ‘sperm giver’since calling a person like him a father/husband would be an insult to entire concept of a family,no?
After about 2 moths of her marriage, my sister got pregnant with some complications in her initial months of pregnancy. She used to bleed and the doctors advised her to avoid certain postures or lift heavy objects to save her from further complications.
Whenever the days of my sister’s checkup would get nearer, the sperm giver would drop her to my father’s home asking her to go for a checkup with my father, making an excuse of being busy at work.
When my father would pay the fee for check up and leave, only then he’d come because he had no intentions of spending his money on ‘these useless checkups’ as he’d like to call it. When my sister would handover the prescription to the sperm giver to get her the medicines advised
by the doc, the sperm-giver would call his father (an ex-medical rep) and ask him if he should buy these medicines. This would help him spend less money by buying low quality medicines with same generic names written on them.
His father would sneer at my sister, “Jitney kharchay tumharay ho rahay hain utnay mein tou aik nae biwi ajati hai.” Which was literally true on their part. (I'll explain it some other time) Anyway, I matched the prescription with the medicines bought by him, by going to the
pharmacy&checking the prices of the medicines that were exchanged with the prescribed ones&got to know that the new medicines were of lower quality and way cheaper than what was prescribed. I instantly bought medicines that were prescribed to save her from further complications.
More than once, sperm giver asked my sister to abort the baby only because he was afraid of the expenses of having a child. On one occasion he told her, “ye bachay tou bus liability hotay hain. Bohat kharcha hota ha inka.” The suggestion of abortion was also put forward because
the complications in pregnancy would limit him to go about his sexual satisfaction. One morning, the sperm giver’s mother asked her to sit down on her knees and wipe water from under the refrigerator. My sister hesitated because that was sure to put baby H’s life at risk
but the sperm giver’s mother’s started shouting at her and moved forward to hit her saying “Tum mujhe ye bacha paida kar k dekhao” Sis tried to save herself & baby H by running into her room. My sister carrying baby H in her womb was hungry since morning&couldn’t take her
medicines on an empty stomach. That day they had left over koftay in the refrigerator from last night. The sperm giver’s mother warned my sister that she had counted the number of koftay (yes?!) and bread slices so if she’d find one less kofta or bread slice, she'd beat her up.
She did beat her in the past so sis, didn't eat anything until evening. When my family came to know the entire situation, they called the sperm giver and asked him to go home and help his wife out. The sperm giver came home to my sister and suggested that she should live
at her parent’s home for 4-5 days.(His way of sounding nice while kicking his wife our of his house). He left her at our doorstep. After a couple days, my sister asked her when's he going to pick her up, he replied back with a “f*ck off” & that was it. She never contacted him again
My sister still had to go for regular checkups&I accompanied her in every trip to the doc.Months passed. I watched baby H grow in her belly.I used to be the one watching the monitor with baby H’s movements,my heart swelling with joy to find out that his heart is beating normally.
The sperm giver still has everything my sister owned including her jewelry that my father gifted her. He also used to demand my father to give him 2 million rupees. He tried to get hold of my sister’s cheque book as well. In short, he did everything that could satisfy his hunger
for money even if it was at the cost of basic human integrity. It has now been almost 2 years, and he has not given my sister her belongings. The case is going on in the court since a year, and the sperm giver did not appear in any of the hearings.
Last Ramadan, a bailiff was sent to his house to hand him the court notice and the very next day the sperm giver came outside our house and physically assaulted my 70 year old father. Yes, he hit him, threatened him, spewed all the hate he had in him just because he wanted money.
Anyway, baby H is a tiny 1 y/o hunk. He has my heart and on his birthday, I can't help but think how he has survived all the hate in his mummy's womb and how he has the most beautiful and carefree laughter that can life me up anytime. I am so proud of him and my sister!
