Yeah because its credibility was totally unharmed when it cut a deal with the Nazis to carve up Poland in 1939
Or after the annexations of the Baltic states in 1940-1 which eliminated democracies and led to thousands executed and deported
In pushing back against the Nazis the Red Army committed numerous mass executions and mass rapes - did that not affect its credibility?
You can question the effectiveness of later NATO interventions without defending the USSR and making out like a defensive alliance in the late 1940s in the West was somehow unreasonable

@anandMenon1 @KeohaneDan @quatremer I actually agree that there's an essential tension between democratic governance and having a European economy that actually works and isn't sent into crisis by the actions of one state. But the point is that there is a tension, not that these rules are completely unnecessary.
@anandMenon1 @KeohaneDan @quatremer Criticise the technocratic regime, be my guest. But be honest about the alternatives:
- Ditching the rules and quickly hitting a new crisis
- Choosing to reverse integration and economic benefits
- Federalism as the only route to real democratic governance of a European economy

There does seem to be a problem with how we define class in this country. On one hand if you go to a top university, a lot of measures judge that this makes you privileged and so you no longer 'count' as working class representation.
On the other hand looking at someone's background and parents seems to suggest your class is set from birth and is unchangeable - a pretty uncomfortable thought.
As @TomChivers points out, we should expect people who went to some of the best universities in the world to be overrepresented just about everywhere. Why do we react with shock then when this stat is pointed out in, for example, politics and journalism?

Hitler had planned for his invasion of #Poland to start #OTD on this day in 1939 - however he was momentarily spooked by the Anglo-Polish alliance and the prospect of Mussolini's arbitration and so decided to rescind the invasion order... #WW2
One detachment of #German soldiers, however, had already left their starting positions when the halt order came through, and could not be reached by radio. The group under Lt. Hans-Albrecht Herzner was invading Poland on their own.
Herzner's task was to capture and hold the strategically important rail tunnel beneath Jablunka Pass on the Polish frontier, and wait for the arrival of the German 10th Army, which he assumed would be following hard on his heels. #WW2

Irish High Court was asked by Polish Gov to extradite Mr Celmer under EU law for trial on drug charges. Irish judge ruled Poland’s Gov has seriously undermined rule of law by taking political control over judges (agreeing with Euro Commission) 2/
So Irish Court asked Court of Justice of EU to rule on # approach Irish Court should take. AG opinion is advice to CJEU on how CJEU should rule. Mostly CJEU takes that advice, but not always. 3/
