More nondeterministic shit from modern software: there's features on my phone that seem kind of appealing but appear completely at random according to no apparent stimulus
I called my cellphone from like 9 different numbers today because I work at a phone company and I was doing testing. I just found a lone notif "do you know this number? tap here to add contact or block" on the last one
everything is ephemeral. It's like trying to get extra napkins at a restaurant, there's no way to actually request it, you have to hope your waiter comes by and asks if you want anything.
What if I wanted that popup for all those calls? So I don't have to go however many levels deep into I don't even know where to do what that popup does in one tap? What if I don't want them ever? It's Kafkaesque.
I don't know where it comes from to make it happen again, or make it not happen, or understand why it only sometimes happens. I'm being """helped""" in that silicon valley way where I don't get asked if I want help, or if the help is helping me right
Some people think I'm a curmudgeon. No. I believe functions of a computer should always be traceable back to their originator. That's the core of a ton of my complaints and you can't say I'm being unreasonable.
I believe if something happens or if information is shown to me on my computer there should be a record of it, so that information isn't all delivered as ephemeral, ungraspable puffs of smoke that I dare not disturb lest it be lost forever.
When a reminder fires, I can't touch it. If I accidentally tap it, it's gone, unless I then commit to a dozen more taps to set a new time to see it again. A reminder is this soap bubble that appears in my notifs that I must carefully tiptoe around.
The notif is an object. It could be moved into a recycle bin, or leave a simplified trace of itself in a persistent log. none of this is done. it's just a strand of spiders silk that forces me to slow my actions to a crawl
in trying to snooze a reminder, you could miss it by one pixel and make it go away, or you could accidentally twitch your finger and throw it away. it's so fragile. gossamer. a grain of fairy dust.
