It's good politics to try to portray anti-abortion folks as taking that position because they hate women. For fundraising, this is a real winner. But for actually understanding your opposition, it is a loser. I know many anti-abortion folks- they think it is really killing a baby
If I burn my house down with some kids inside and they die in the fire, no one is going to consider it a defense to say "You can't tell me what I can and can't do with my property." A woman, IF she is really carrying a full-blown life, is going to have some restrictions.
Classic duty and a privilege thing -- in fact for both sexes, though in different ways. A woman has some duties to protect the fetus's health (e.g. no drug use) while the man who impregnated her has legal financial duties to the child for life.
I think the fetus is not a life at conception+1 day but is a life at birth-1 and I have no clue about where to draw the line in the middle and worry a lot whether we are doing it right. But this simplification that it is just a hate-women thing makes me crazy
If the abortion opposition only rested on misogyny, we would have reached an accommodation long ago, as we have with gay marriage, for example. The center moved to support gay rights despite what any church was telling them, & few are worried about Obergefell getting overturned.
The core of abortion opposition is from people who really, really think babies are being killed. If I have any criticisms of these ani-abortion folks, it's that they seem remarkably well-behaved given that they think murder is being done.
The real legal problem here is that Roe v. Wade as written is really an incoherent decision, and I am a libertarian that starts assuming the government shouldn't have the power to ban most anything. Ms. Harris, who is a smart experienced lawyer, must know this
That's why as a lawyer she is not arguing the law. O'Connor did her best to fix Roe, which is on somewhat firmer foundations now, though she doesn't get much credit from feminists.
