I suspect that the author of the op-ed withheld specifics because he/she doesn't want to risk being exposed. There's a section in the piece where the author talks about how "adults in the room" are handling Russian transgressions differently than Trump.
I'd imagine it's difficult to advise or even police an impulsive narcissist like Trump (an incompetent who is as arrogant as he is ignorant.) That's why there's been such a high turnover. McMaster departed. Hicks departed. There's talk about Mattis leaving
