2/ Our culture often has an antagonistic attitude towards grief: it's something to get over, to overcome, to be resilient against. Right now I am in the thick of it all, feeling so much sadness that I can hardly breathe.
3/ But I find something beautiful in the fact that humans can feel so much--that we can love others so deeply that losing them makes us feel like we are dying ourselves.

Thread: Looking at China illuminates just how nascent the US “influencer stack” is. While the US continues to debate whether influencer marketing is even effective, China has an entire industry of influencer incubators who work end-to-end to turn individuals into big businesses.
These influencer incubators do everything from selecting and grooming talent, managing and growing social profiles (including teaching how to apply makeup, pose, and livestream), to helping their talent launch their own brands and e-commerce stores.
Like VC firms that pool risk among different startups, these incubators--which take a cut of influencers' sales--work with dozens or hundreds of influencers, though much of their revenue comes from the top few who gain massive traction.

Thread: “Fake it til you make it” is a key strategy for overcoming the chicken-and-egg problem of starting a new marketplace, popularized by companies like Uber and Yelp. The idea is to bootstrap one side of the marketplace inorganically in order to attract the other side.
There are a few tactics that fall under this umbrella of faking it in a marketplace--including paying guarantees or subsidizing transactions, managing supply, or producing the supply/demand yourself. Then, at a certain point, network effects kick in and organic growth takes over.
A few examples:
1) Uber launched by going to black car companies and paying drivers to be available on Uber during certain hours, ensuring that riders would be able to find a ride.

Network effects are powerful but too often seen as black-or-white: a company either has them or doesn't. In reality, they vary widely in types & strength. I compiled a list of 16 metrics to measure network effects, coauthored with my colleague @dcoolican:

Measuring network effects begins with the basic definition of a network effect: does your product become more valuable to its users as more people use it? Quantifying the additional value that user n+100 gets over the nth user is tricky, but not impossible.
Products have different types of network effects that mature differently over time. We cover how network effects manifest themselves in metrics related to acquisition, competitors, engagement, marketplace, and economics.

#China will attempt a forceful unification with #Taiwan by 2021, the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party. Xi's grand dream of national rejuvenation entails unifying all that #CCP considers Chinese lands, especially Taiwan.

This THREAD looks at this potential scenario.
The legitimacy of the #CCP regime under Xi is based on the twin pillars of economic growth and nationalism. For the party-state, unifying the mainland and Taiwan is critical to its aspirations of national rejuvenation and erasure of national humiliation.
Why would PRC force a unification as early as 2021? 1) 2021 is the centenary of the #CCP; anniversaries and dates have massive symbolic importance in China's political culture. 2) Xi wants unification to be part of his legacy. This is the only way that he can outshine #Mao.

A senior administration officials says @POTUS wants duties increased from 10% to 25% t on #China products due to that country’s unfair trading practices. "We gave them many, many opportunities over a year to address our concerns...we have obviously not seen movement from them."
"They responded by threatening us with their own tariffs" covering almost 40 percent of US imports, says US official. "They started with these unfair trading practices."
