THREAD - I'm familiar with the subj. of sexual assault in prisons. I spent 2yrs absorbed in it while editing, reading and writing technical assessment reports about assault in some of the nation's most violent prisons and jails. So today, during the hearing on migrant kids,

when the question was posed: "Is it a federal crime if a child is sexually assaulted in a federal [immigration] facility?”
And the acting deputy assistant attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice said he "didn't know," I was deeply concerned.

Was it his lack of awareness? Or is it ignorance? Or is it sheer lack of preparation? Whatever it was that was exhibited at today's hearing...it was, at multiple times, deeply troubling for me to hear in light of what I have been privy to ovr the yrs.

I found it equally troubling when one of the heads of ICE summarily said it was the "parent's fault" for bringing children here, when knowing illegal entry poses its own dangers. A debate pt I hear all the time. On the basis of human compassion, I respectfully reject that.

My problem is that not only do these officials seem unaware or ill-informed about the threats posed to kids in detention during the SHORT TERM, but they're here advocating for rewrites to rules which would expose kids to harm in the INDEFINITE TERM.

I hope you will read/share this article w/those who didn't catch the hearing. This matter won't go away and must be addressed. Accountability is just one way the public ensures the weakest among us are not exploited.
