Hi folks working on un(der)documented languages - Language Documentation and Description is trialing a new article type: Language Snapshots are 1500 words providing the basic information on a language! Why, you ask? (thread! 1/)
For SO MANY languages this information doesn't exist in an easy-access public location. There is so much information about the world's languages locked away in never-read grant applications. Language Snapshots provides a streamlined process to get this information out there 2/
When something is published, then it can be included in (e.g.) Wikipedia, Glottolog and other atlas/survey style publications. It also means you don't have to write the same details a dozen times in a dozen articles. 3/
The Language Snapshots *won't* be fully double-blind peer-reviewed, but simply a place to make this information publically available. Think of it like the old 'letters' or 'short and sweet' section in journals. 4/
And publishing this doesn't prevent you from also publishing a longer format article when you have more detail about the language - think of this as the start-of-project thing, and a Language Contexts article as the end-of-project thing 5/
(Language Contexts articles are longer form, peer-reviewed. For more detail, check out: elpublishing.org/language-conte…) 6/
Language Snapshots is all about getting #lingdata out there, in a way that can be cited, and built upon - which is something I care about a lot. If you want to see examples of what this type of paper looks like, get in touch! DM me or email l.gawne at latrobe.edu.au 7/7
