Be careful. A woman hasn't come forward. This accusation comes from an anonymous man from Rhode Island who, after seeing Kavanaugh's high school photo on TV, claims to remember Kavanaugh raped a woman w another man named Mark on a boat in 1985.
The fifth allegation comes from a Rhode Island man who says "a close acquaintance" of his was raped in 1985. The allegation doesn't come directly from a woman. This is a second-handed account.
The RI man has now recanted his story.

The GOP is "now releasing anonymous allegations in an effort to make all allegations look frivolous." Please focus on allegations from people who are willing to come forward with their full identity. @renato_mariotti

Told Comey to "let Flynn go." Fired Comey & went on national tv to admit that it was over the Russia investigation. Went on Twitter to attack investigators. Fired McCabe. Attacked Sessions for recusing & eventually pushed him out. Installed attacker of the investigation as AG.
Whitaker won't recuse like Sessions did, despite obvious appearance of conflict of interest.

So I have things to say about internalized misogyny and evangelical mindsets. Obviously, as a man, I only have direct personal experience with the latter. But I've seen them both play out in one of the people I care about most: my mother. And her support of Brett #Kavanaugh.
I'm thinking about this now because my mother is a classic evangelical Christian: a very nice person with very problematic beliefs. Conservative without being a fundamentalist weirdo, doesn't "like" Trump but voted for him, thinks gay people are mentally ill and in sin, etc.
My family is deeply religious and heavily involved in the church. We went every Sunday, to both services. My mother and father both, at varying points, served on pastoral staff temporarily after a pastor suddenly left. They were close friends with all the pastors and elders.

I'm a sociologist who studies adolescent sexual violence. On this thread, I will be live tweeting the #Kavanaugh hearing, chiming in with sociological insights and research findings.
Full disclosure--I will probably step away for parts of it. While many conservatives have cast feminists as people who rejoice at allegations of sexual assault against powerful men, this is a painful process for us. We know survivors. We are survivors. And I will need breaks.
It does not bode well that the beginning of this hearing is starting with equating #Kavanaugh and #Ford's experiences with harassment following Dr. Ford's allegations. They are absolutely not the same.
