DOJ just announced Corey Amundson, a former acting US attorney in Louisiana, will lead the Office of Professional Responsibility. OPR investigates misconduct claims against DOJ attorneys, immigration judges, and federal law enforcement agents
OPR is different from the inspector general's office. A big distinction is OPR will investigate ethics claims against lawyers and complaints about how lawyers handled cases — OIG doesn't do that, it's focused on broader workplace-related issues (fraud, waste, harassment, etc.)
This has been a source of tension in the past — the inspector general's office, which is independent of DOJ leadership, has argued it should have the power to investigate attorney ethics/misconduct issues. OPR is within DOJ

NEW: The federal judiciary now expects to have enough money from other sources to keep the courts largely business-as-usual during the shutdown through Jan. 18 (previously it was Jan. 11) — this is the latest from the Administrative Office of the US Courts (HT @hsu_spencer)
In order to make the funds that the judiciary does have (absent a congressional appropriation) last as long as possible, "courts have been asked to delay or defer non-mission critical expenses, such as new hires, non-case related travel, and certain contracts"
DOJ, of course, is already affected by the shutdown, so most judges have been approving requests or issuing blanket orders to delay civil litigation involving the federal govt during the shutodwn (criminal cases still have to proceed as usual)

Some fireworks in court this morning as a judge criticized the lawyer representing Concord Management & Consulting in the special counsel Russian troll farm case for his language and harsh words about Mueller's office in filings — "unprofessional, inappropriate, and ineffective"
The judge told attorney Eric Dubelier that his strategy was "ineffective" and that his approach to filings — including pop culture quotes (see: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5676…) and accusing Mueller's office basically of lawlessness — was "undermining your credibility in this courthouse"
"Knock it off," Judge Dabney Friedrich told Dubelier. This then led to a heated exchange where Dubelier said he needed to consult his client since the judge had accused of unprofessional conduct, and now there might be bias from the judge. There's no bias, the judge replied.

Remember how prosecutors accused Paul Manafort of breaching his plea deal? His lawyers are due to file a response today about that — recall that at a Dec. 11 hearing, Manafort's lawyers said they needed more time to decide if they agreed or not with the govt's claims re: lying
There's no time deadline on this filing due today from Manafort's lawyer, so it could come at any time before midnight, which is always fun

PORTLAND, Ore. – Antonio Oswaldo Burgos, 48, of Portland, pleaded guilty today to one count of bribery of a public official after attempting to bribe a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer.
“Attempting to bribe a federal law enforcement officer is a serious crime and will be met with equally-serious consequences,” said Billy J. Williams, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The Department of Justice today announced Corey Amundson as the head of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR). Corey Amundson has replaced Robin Ashton, who left the position after almost a decade of service in the Office of Professional Responsibility.
As the head of the OPR, Mr. Amundson will lead a component of the U.S. Department of Justice that investigates misconduct allegations against Department attorneys, immigration judges, and law enforcement agents. He is the fourth permanent head since the office was founded.

The NY Times did an article a while back about the lack of female agents in the higher ranks. Of the bureau’s 13,523 agents over all, 2,683, or about 20 percent, are women.“There is a lack of women in leadership roles.”
“The big challenge we’ve been confronting over the last 2 years is, how do we get women & people of color” to join the F.B.I., Mr. Comey said last Sunday at a conference of police chiefs in San Diego. “That’s been our big trouble, & I’ve described it as a crisis.”
Comey needed to look at retention; not recruitment. How many women and people of color resign from the FBI. How many of these people file EEOs. Senator Grassley brought up the female whistleblowers & Comey refused to meet with us.

All aspects of any of Mr. Page’s engagements are subject to being secretly monitored.   This is an entirely different level of surveillance authority, the highest possible, and has nothing to do with FISA-702
