First day back at work and I saw the "moral injury" with clear eyes statnews.com/2018/07/26/phy…
I think one of the things that people who are not poor don't understand is just how unstable and violent the bureaucracy of poverty is.
Case in point: being dropped from your health insurance without warning for obscure bureaucratic reasons. Having to navigate complex paperwork to reapply. Being denied because you make a dollar over income.
This happens ALL. THE. TIME and it causes egregious disruptions in necessary medical care. I have a 12-year-old patient who has been cutting, and she was unable to see mental health for months because she was inexplicably dropped from her insurance plan.
I have a 4-month-old who had open heart surgery. Mom has low health literacy and another child with special needs, has worked really hard to be able to stay on top of all the meds and appointments. Child's insurance is switched for no reason and we have to start all over again.
As a primary care provider, I'm exhausted, for my patients and myself. We work so hard at the medical decision making and building trusting relationships with our patients and holding space for trauma and it's just so demoralizing to work within this system
Something's gotta give. #primarycare #burnout #MedicareForAll
