Ethereum Classic ($ETC) was 51% attacked yesterday. This is the largest cryptocurrency that has ever been 51% attacked, and it has really interesting implications for the future of PoW currencies. Thread. 👇
It was once assumed that 51% attacks would kill cryptocurrencies. But we've seen several major cryptocurrencies get attacked in the last year, and we can now put that thesis safely to rest. ETC only dipped 7% after getting attacked. Markets basically shrugged it off.
Verge actually *gained* in price after being 51% attacked. This seems totally fucked—if blockchains aren't valuable for their security, what the hell makes them valuable?

When I was a poker player, the hardest thing to learn was distancing myself from my intuition.

If you stare at a table for long enough, you'll convince yourself that you know what your opponent has. You'll invent a story that makes sense. It will "feel" like he has top pair. 1/3
Being driven 100% by intuition is a telltale sign of bad poker.

Intuition learns faster than your conscious mind, but it's very bad at dealing with probabilities. Intuition makes you think in terms of "this is what he has," as opposed to "he'll have this 30% of the time." 2/3
As a poker player, the first thing you have to get over is the worship of intuition. It's just another tool in your toolkit, and not always the right tool for the job. This is a lesson that I learned early, and I'm realizing most investors don't understand this. 3/3

Straw poll on interest of the room of soldiers and inventors. Talking about how women were soldiers, that there were lots of reasons to go to war, that lgbtq erasure is real and that some women returned and went on lecture circuit;
others lived in male garb for rest of life after war and that many of them are likely what we would understand as trans.
Also all the nurses and wives going to war. Quick anecdote of soldier's wife grumpy about laundry ruined by canon ball.

I got Apocalypse Mix by Jane Satterfield for Christmas. I put it on my list for some reason, but I don't remember anything about it, so this will have no personal bias.
I like the look of the book. It's got a kind of pulp fiction look to it. The cover image is a crow, power lines, and thornbushes. This is my world!
First thing I notice is that it won the 2016 Autumn House Poetry Prize. I'm already jealous because even though I didn't enter that contest, I have lost many chapbook and book contests.
