1/ Lots of attention yesterday to @apple’s Privacy developments. Don’t forget it’s still a data company though and makes money off data. I’d like understand from @tim_cook know why on iOS, users cannot set the default search engine of THEIR CHOICE? ..
2/ @Apple only allows one of four predetermined search engines from @google @yahoo (think @oath ) @bing @DuckDuckGo The default is automatically set by Apple to the @Google search Engine - Privacy by Design? I don’t think so. So .../
3/ on what basis does Apple allow @google @Yahoo @bing @DuckDuckGo to be the chosen four? Purely altruism? Some quid pro quo?

I will be ready to ask @tim_cook about this at the @icdppc2018 given that Mr Cook is due to give a keynote.
@Google @Yahoo @bing @DuckDuckGo @tim_cook @icdppc2018 4/ "Apple launches privacy website ahead of EU speech” news.sky.com/story/apple-la…

"Tim Cook will be speaking at the 40th annual international conference of data protection and privacy commissioners in Brussels on Wednesday, 24 October” <I’ll be in the audience cc @icdppc2018
@Google @Yahoo @bing @DuckDuckGo @tim_cook @icdppc2018 5/ Apple’s approach to Privacy apple.com/uk/privacy/app…

Apple is a leader IMHO .. but I’d like to understand why iOS users are unable to set a search engine of THEIR choice for iOS Safari.
6/ and @Apple also defaults to ON, approx 13 location settings the moment a user enables location settings 🤔 that includes using YOUR location to support APPLE’s advertising business interests & $$$. By ‘enabling location based services’ you give your consent to this 🤔@tim_cook
7/ at #CPDP2018 an Apple representative advised that a GDPR rollout was immenent and that would address the issue. Was it rolled out?🤔

If @Apple believes privacy is a fundamental right (& and which is a legal right in many countries & regions) then that means ../8
8/ if @Apple believes privacy is a fundamental right, that means respecting people’s right to choose .. when Apple says “you have a right to keep [information] private” that should mean from Apple too (think location to support Apple Ads).

While Apple continue to ../9
9/ while Apple continues to lead on privacy, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that it is still a data company .. a company that still analyses human data to support its $$$$ profit. Privacy as a fundamental human right means privacy respectful defaults cc @tim_cook
10/ the right to privacy should also mean the right to control the ability of others to surveil and target you with location based ads for example.

It’s more than the law. It’s also a matter of ethics - a matter that @tim_cook will speak on next Wednesday at the @icdppc2018
11/ @tim_cook will be giving a keynote at the @icdppc2018 on the theme “Debating Ethics: Dignity and Respect in Data Driven Life” - so, while I respects the great efforts Apple is making, I still have some questions about “Privacy, Ethics and Respect in Data Driven Life”
12/ whenever I take policy makers through Apple’s system services location defaults all automatically set to ON, the moment a person ‘enables location services’ (cos that’s what Apple thinks is consent l) ... they’re shocked ... as are 99.9% of people I take through it.
13/ @tim_cook Vice News Interview (HBO)
14/ so I emailed the press office of one of the four default search engines asking about how a search engine gets on the Apple iOS Safari search engine list. I copied @tim_cook Apple UK CEO & Apple press office. Today I get a phone call ......
15/ I was told Apple doesn’t make public the reasons why the iOS Safari search engine only allows 4 choices. The decision is a ‘strategic one’ an ‘engineering one’ a ‘security one’ - I didn’t really get an answer nor did the agent have one to be fair .
16/ I advised that @tim_cook was giving a keynote at @icdppc2018 & that I would ask him unless the conference doesn’t permit questions🤔 the response-“that would be a great opportunity to get an answer.” Let’s see shall we cos for some reason @Apple doesn’t want to be transparent
