Advocates say this would provide 1,000 with shelter and keep 7,000 from slipping into homelessness, through rental assistance etc. Also mental health services, etc.
Opponents essentially don't like it for two reasons: 1) it's a tax (even though a small fraction of Trump tax breaks companies just got. just a 1/2% tax on gross receipts) 2) it didn't go through "channels"
^^ Tax is only levied on SF's biggest businesses, I should note.
Businesses and politicians opposed to this worry that higher taxes could drive those corps away. But the risk to loosing tourism, residents, small businesses overwhelmed by the problem seems a much more proximate risk.
70% of our current homeless population was formerly housed in San Francisco. That's what the annual census of homeless has found.
What I find striking is that opponents of PropC keep saying "there's no accountability, no reforms" but ****never*** say what those reforms should be.
