One major argument for NOT attempting to formalize blockchain/Web3 governance: it gives corporations a system they can capture. - @VladZamfir on the difference between Web2 and Web3 governance and how to prevent capture in Web3 at the #Web3summit
Up next, @harryhalpin on the standardization failure of the web: the very technology that was designed to protect Web2 from centralization (via identity), OAuth, was captured by Facebook via Facebook Connect.
RSS is an example of bad, unusable standards - since people were religiously devoted to boring, crappy standards like XML - leading to the failure of open social media and content in Web2.
"Protocols are power. It's in everyone's collective interest to build standards. Where to make the dividing line between standards and commercialization is a political question. Should these things be built into Ethereum? You need governance to decide."
"Another lesson: remove charismatic leaders. They're useful in the beginning but inevitably they'll become corrupt or go crazy and hurt the decentralization of the system."
"Another lesson: don't have voting. These lead to pay to play. And if you have standard, make them real standards - don't allow patents! And develop social processes to check egos. And build a DIRECT democracy where everyone can participate. You have forking, I wish we had this!"
"The really revolutionary thing about blockchain is that it has a built in payments layer - so you are not beholden to Google to finance open source. This is so new that we don't know how it will play out from a governance perspective."
"'We reject: kings, presidents and voting. We believe in: rough consensus and running code.' - this ethos from David Clark and @ietf is the one thing that saved the internet from the fate of the web."
"You (the Web3 community) must build a decentralized system of trust without a dictator, that evolves over time." Amazing advice and lessons learned from failures in Web2 by @harryhalpin 🙏🙏
@whanamura quoting @granick: "We must build tools that protect privacy from no less than sovereign states who are used to having access to data. And they will come after you."
"Things are in motion now that are very difficult to predict. The properties we give the technologies we're building today will have far reaching impact for billions of people in the future. Software is eating the world." @juanbenet kicks off the afternoon session
"How correct, how fast, how open, how safe, how they're governed, who controls them - these properties matter. You are part of a lucky few who know how to build these systems."
Some attempts to define Web3 courtesy of @juanbenet and @gavofyork. "The key, critical property of Web3 is making things verifiable."
There's a lot going on at #Web3summit aside from the main stage! Including this @DAppNode presentation at the Decentral node organized by @Givethio and a lockpicking workshop at the "Lockpick village" 🤓🔓
