Every time I hear someone say "caravan" from Latin America, I think of this beautiful painting from John August Swanson:
Of the work, Swanson wrote, "I remembered walking with groups in candlelight for peace in Central America. The symbol of candles shining in
the dark night is powerful to me. Star-filled nights are images that help give me a sense of the place we are in the universe."
And more: "My thought was that this would be a procession of children from every city & town. The children would bring light & peace to the world. They would gather from many places, joining an unending procession towards peace and nonviolence for all children of the world."
If our hearts are inclined toward fear, we "see" a "caravan" of threat. But, if our hearts are inclined toward love, perhaps the children want to teach us something very different, a pilgrimage toward a world of peace and nonviolence for all.
Does your heart incline toward fear or love today? What do you see?
Do we build walls and block the possibility of peace? Or do we take up our candles, carry the light, and join the procession?
