THREAD: I had to do some research on armed guards in schools, synagogues, etc. It's difficult - there is very very little research on armed guards and "active shooter incidents". Like basically no data. But what I was able to dig up shows a few things:
1) Where there are more guns, there is more gun violence and more deaths. Period. This is not new news. @MomsDemand @Everytown #Pittsburg #WeDeserveBetter
2) An FBI report analyzed 160 active shooter incidents between 2000 and 2013. The following data was presented:
In 45 of the 160 incidents where law enforcement engaged a shooter, law enforcement suffered casualties in 21 (46.7%) of the incidents (9 officers killed & 28 wounded)
3) Security and police experts around the globe agree that a SWAT team is more effective than an armed guard. One shooter against one shooter, or one shooter against multiple shooters is not as effective as a trained swat team in an active shooter situation.
4) In active shooter situations, most deaths occur in the first 1-3 minutes. That means an armed guard needs to be in the exact location of the incident as it is happening.
5) I’ll stop here: Just look at the data from this one incident. Four policemen were shot. Four. Against one shooter.
Armed guards give the perception our children are more safe. But it is just that: a perception. The motivating factor behind this is fear, a powerful emotion. Guns tap directly into that fear, providing the illusion that we are better protected, more safe, we have done all we can
We need federal laws, comprehensive federal background checks, bans on automatic weapons, a working real time database, states to have bandwidth to not let people slip through the cracks AND social media companies that actually ban hate speech and threats. #VoteThemOut #Vote
