This weekend, if you're not Jewish, consider joining the #ShowUpForShabbat event as a gesture of solidarity with your Jewish neighbors. If you have kids, this is a great opportunity to talk about living in a multicultural society and teach about being a good guest.

Also, given that church services are usually Sunday mornings, if you haven't attended Jewish services before you might be assuming they're Saturday mornings. And there are Sat morning services, but for a lot of congregations the bigger services are Friday nights.
Jewish holidays start at sundown, so welcoming in Shabbat is a very important and beautiful ritual on Friday evenings.

Okay, here's my quasi-annual list of Christmas music you could be listening to instead of the 18th cover of that terrible "Last Christmas" song, or the time Paul McCartney forgot he was a Beatle and should have some dignity and phoned in "simply having a wonderful xmas time."
Side note: hey, coffee shops and retail stores of America, look, I understand that the reason you are playing all this crap Christmas music when there's like 400 years of gorgeous carols is bc you don't want to play overtly religious music in your establishment.
But for the love of sweet baby Jesus, please, as someone who is very much Not Christian, I'm telling you, I would rather hear a nice version of Adeste Fidelis any day than fucking "Last Christmas." Plus, instrumental versions of carols with super-religious lyrics exist.

Man, I was enjoying my December away from Twitter, but I have some thoughts on this.
This is example #196134135761 of how most people in positions of authority in games absolutely *will not* do the right thing unless public backlash forces them to.
Think about that next time you're wondering why some woman had to make a giant public stink about things rather than handling things in a genteel, demure, behind-the-scenes manner.

One of the worst parts of the academic job market, post-2008: constantly fighting for the opportunity to be interviewed and judged by those with CVs 1/6 the length of yours.
I’ve been told to censor my own CV (cut it down by half) so that academic departments will seriously consider me as a hire. I’ve also been told the reverse.

This shit is so frustrating and draining.
If it wasn’t for my students, I would have dropped out of academia a long time ago. But the endless postdoc and VAP cycle...

I refuse to call it quits yet — because I love teaching, and I emphatically believe this all matters so much, but... how does one know where the limit is?

1) So I went to a different synagogue today and heard from one of the great #Jewish thinkers, leaders, scholars, good souls of our time, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.

It is hard to overstate his influence but let's just say this was once in a lifetime.

2) Rabbi Telushkin was the scholar-in-residence at Congregation Beth Sholom in Potomac, Maryland. That means he gave multiple talks, Friday night, during services, after services, and again just before Havdalah (ritual ending the Sabbath).

I got to hear two of the talks.
3) Why should you care about this when there are more important things happening in the world?

I would argue that we spend a lot of time talking about the bad actors that have invaded our culture. We should talk about the good ones, more.

This morning in synagogue, as so many chose to #ShowUpForShabbat the Torah portion we read was Hayyei Sarah (The Life of Sarah). In it, when Sarah dies and Abraham seeks a burial site for her, he calls himself a Ger Toshav, a resident alien among the Hittites. 1/10
But the Hittites say to him, "Hear us, you are the elect of God among us." They reject Abraham's removal of himself from among them. They are telling him he belongs. 2/10
That reminded me of the famous letter from President George Washington to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island in 1790. Not the oft-quoted passage of how the US government "gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance", but the following words: 3/10
