1/ In this thread, I chart puzzling IHS Markit registration data for the $TSLA Model 3. If this data is correct, it provides further strong circumstantial evidence that @InsideEVs grossly exaggerated Jul/Aug delivery numbers. It also makes the immaculate quarter even more weird.
2/ We begin with Vehicles in Operation (VIO) data provided by IHS Markit. These are cumulative numbers through Q3 for the $TSLA Model 3 (both US and Canada). There's something very odd about the Q3 numbers.
3/ The oddity becomes apparent when you compare the above data to the cumulative delivery numbers claimed by $TSLA. Here is the same chart with the data pulled from their press releases.
4/ Subtracting the VIO number from the cumulative deliveries yields what I'm calling 'Unregistered Model 3s'. You would always expect some spillover between quarters, as cars sold in the final days could reasonably be expected to become registered thereafter, but Q3 is extreme!
5/ According to this data, $TSLA entered Q3 with 3,445 spillover registrations, and added 28,484 to the VIO total during the quarter, meaning only 25,039 of the claimed deliveries of 55,840 were registered.
6/ Just how extreme is the Q3 data? Here are the monthly delivery estimates from @InsideEVs. Essentially, it appears that $TSLA stopped registering Model 3s in mid-August. Or, there's something very wrong with this data.
7/ So what does all this mean? You tell me, because something doesn't add up.
$TSLA $TSLAQ

h/t @FalconWingFail for the data
