Having wrestled with it on a production app now, I think I can safely conclude that Rails Active Storage isn't quite ready for production use - beyond a very narrow use case. Unless I'm doing something majorly wrong.
It works well as a file storage library where a user needs to securely and infrequently access files, a good use case might be a digital downloads platform like Themeforest or... Zipsell ;)
But using it for serving up multiple image variants per page just doesn't work well as everything gets routed through the rails app and it doesn't play nice with CDNs. For image variants, Paperclip + Cloudfront is still the way to go for production apps IMO.
Looks like I have a super fun day ahead of me pulling Active Storage out of Promomatic and plugging in Paperclip! 😩
